About this course

Word is a powerful word-processor designed to simplify creating, formatting and cross-referencing documents, no matter the complexity of the document.

After attending one of our sessions you will be able to confidently utilise the power of Word to create professional polished documents.

Please note: We specialise in delivering this course in-house to small groups or individuals. We don’t run scheduled public courses.

About this course

This full-day hands-on course takes you through creating a professionally styled business document which includes a cover page, table of contents, page numbering, headings and sub headings, bullets and numbering (including sub-para numbering), photos, an organisational chart and tables of text and data. A mail merge to a letter template and to labels will also be performed using data held in an Excel workbook.

Exercises and practice files are supplied for use during the training and for use post-training, allowing you the opportunity to repeat the exercises again in your own time.

The course is primarily for people who already understand the fundamentals of working with Microsoft® Word and who now wish to use the power of Word to create professional polished documents.

This course will suit anybody who wants to learn how to quickly create documents that are professional in look and functionality.

This course is perfect for you if…

  • You would like to confidently work with elements found in large, complex documents, e.g.table of contents, images, changes to page orientation, headers, footers and paragraph and page numbering

  • You want to include cross-references within your document so that they are automatically updated when modifications are made

You will already have the essential skills needed to create, format, edit, save and print Word documents.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants should be able to confidently:

  • Format and update paragraphs with bullet points, numbering and controlled spacing
  • Present balanced columns of text and numbers
  • Change the document formats using Section Breaks
  • Repeat text, graphics or page numbering at the top or bottom of each page
  • Control where page numbers, headers and footers and page orientations change in the document

  • Insert photo and image files, diagrams and flowcharts
  • Mail merge to a letter and to labels
  • Use the Envelopes and Labels command to quickly print on to stationery
  • Use Styles to quickly apply formatting to headings and body text
  • Automatically generate and update a table of contents, footnotes and endnotes

Learning method

This course is delivered by a certified Microsoft® Office Specialist and is currently offered as a client workshop or as individual coaching.

Course duration

Workshop delivery consists of 6 hours hands-on tuition. Please note the duration is set for a maximum of 12 people. Individual coaching can be customised to suit. Please contact us to discuss.

Bullets and Numbering

  • Apply bullet points to paragraphs
  • Create Numbering paragraphs
  • Outline documents using sub-paragraph numbering
  • Control paragraph and line settings


  • Insert a Table
  • Use the Table drawing tools
  • Format the table
  • Work with paragraph formats within the table
  • Merge and split cells
  • Insert / delete rows and columns
  • Change column width and row height
  • Resize and moving a table

Inserting photos, image files and diagrams

  • Insert and place images in a document
  • Insert shapes and diagrams
  • Applying formatting

Section Breaks

  • Learn why section breaks are needed and how to insert and edit them
  • Apply formatting to individual sections

Headers, Footers and Page Numbering

  • Create a header and footer
  • Use section breaks with headers and footers
  • Insert, modify and remove automatic page numbering
  • Use section breaks to control page numbering

Envelopes, Labels and Mail Merge

  • Use the Envelopes and Labels command to quickly print on to stationery
  • Understand how mail merge works
  • Create a mail merge document
  • Link the data source to the mail merge document
  • Create labels using mail merge


  • Use the Quick Style gallery and Word’s default styles
  • Create a new style
  • Modify styles

Working with large documents

  • Insert footnotes and endnotes
  • Generate a table of contents
  • Update references
  • Navigation tips for working in large documents

We bring the training to you. That’s right! We don’t run scheduled courses. We come to your place of work. Avoid traffic and parking hassles and learn at work. And if you don’t have a laptop, we can lend you one. Pricing is adjusted depending on the number of attendees.

1 person only – $650+GST (5 hours)
2 to 3 people – $350+GST per person
4 to 6 people – $325+GST per person
7 to 12 people – $295+GST per person
